From Recovery to Rally: Second Chances With Susan Seki
Pickleball Spotlight: Susan Seki
A retired creative with deep Windward roots shares why she keeps coming back to the court.
Honolulu—We first met at a tournament at the Hawaii Convention Center, and in the times I’ve bumped into her since, one thing always stands out—her awesome pickleball t-shirts. Every time I see her, she’s sporting a new one that perfectly captures the spirit of the game.
A proud Kailua Surfrider, she picked up a paddle in 2019 and hasn’t looked back since. Whether she’s rallying on the court, tending her garden, or showing up for a community project, Susan brings good energy, a great attitude, and a whole lot of heart.
She’s also someone who plays with deep gratitude. After facing cancer and coming out the other side, she now sees every game as a gift—and a chance to keep moving, connecting, and living fully.
Without further ado, please meet Susan Seki!
Where did you grow up and what high school did you go to?
I am a proud Surfrider and graduated from Kailua High School.
How did you discover pickleball and when did you start playing?
A friend of my husband’s introduced us to it in 2019 and we’ve been playing ever since.
What do you love most about pickleball?
I love the competitiveness of the sport. But actually, there are several things about it besides that. I love the exercise and especially the great circle of friends I’ve met that I would have never met otherwise, which includes my best friend. Plus, it’s a sport that my husband and I enjoy together.
What do you do outside of pickleball (hobbies, work, school, etc)?
My hobbies were silk screening and photography. But now that I’m retired, I like gardening and of course playing pickleball. But I also love to assist in community service projects.
What paddle are you playing with and why did you choose it?
I play with the Engage MX Pro and like the length of it for my overhead slams.
How often do you play?
I usually play about 4 times a week but actually, it depends how much my body can tolerate!

What is the next goal you’re working toward (in PB or otherwise)?
My goal would be to keep playing pickleball and to stay as healthy as possible so I can enjoy the sport as I grow older. Being a cancer survivor, I feel I have a second chance at life so I want to take advantage of that! I feel that I’m blessed to have found such a wonderful sport!
Anything else on your mind?
Really, this sport can be learned by anyone who is interested to try. It's a Win-Win situation for anyone to get out there and exercise, make friends and have a lot of fun! You too will be hooked like many of us!!!
