Patsy Terry Didn't Need One More Thing—Then She Found Pickleball
Pickleball Spotlight: Patsy Terry (second from left in red)
How a little peer pressure from her daughter changed everything on the court
Kahului, Maui—She said no, until her daughter wouldn't take no for an answer.
When pickleball first came up, she brushed it off: too busy, already active, didn't need one more thing on the calendar. Her daughter kept at it. In October of 2024, she finally stepped onto the court.
A Maui girl through and through; raised in Haliimaile and graduated from Maui High, she now calls Kahului home, and the pickleball courts there have become one more place where she shows up, moves her body, and finds her people.
Without further ado, please meet Patsy Terry!
Currently residing in: Kahului, Maui.
Where did you grow up, and what high school did you go to?
Haliimaile, Maui, and I attended Maui High School.
How did you discover pickleball, and when did you start playing?
My daughter taught me how to play. I started playing in October 2024. At first, I resisted, thinking I had enough activities and was too busy, but I am now addicted to it.
What do you love most about pickleball?
I love the amount of exercise I get, but I also enjoy the wonderful connection with my friends. Making new great friends, I meet each time I play.
How often do you play?
Twice a week.
What paddle are you using, and what do you like about it?
Paddletek Bantam. I like the grip & the weight.
What is the next goal you’re working toward (in pickleball or otherwise)?
My next goal for pickleball is to be a lot better server/hitter/trying to get a little more points for my teammates. I am trying to be a better person and discipline myself to keep up with my exercise routines.
What do you do outside of pickleball (hobbies, work, volunteerism, school, etc.)?
I have my other activities such as: 2x a week Zumba classes, 3x a week senior class of aerobics/weights & socializing with the ladies/gentlemen, and once a week line dance for two hours. I have a bit of aerobics with heavier weights.
Anything else on your mind?
I have always been taught to try to be humble/patient, to be mindful of others in my life & try to reach out to people whenever possible by my mother & later as a Christian person.
