Shari Dang: The Wedding Planner Who Found Her Perfect Match On the Pickleball Court
Pickleball Spotlight: Shari Dang (L) with PB friend Clarisse
The Honolulu native on friendship, improvement, and why the court beats the gym.
Shari Dang has spent 23 years making other people's most important days go perfectly. As a wedding and event planner, she reads a room, manages chaos with a smile, and knows how to bring people together. It turns out those skills translate beautifully to the pickleball court.
A Kauai girl at heart, Shari was first introduced to the game there years before she ever picked up a paddle seriously. It took the right friends, and the right timing, to bring her back in.
Without further ado, please meet Shari Dang!

Where did you grow up, and what high school did you go to?
I spent my early years on Kauai before moving to Oahu.
How did you discover pickleball, and when did you start playing?
I was first introduced to pickleball while visiting Kauai about seven years ago, though I didn't keep it up at the time. My friends Mike and Kelly reintroduced me to the game in 2021. I started focusing seriously on drilling and playing in 2023.
What do you love most about pickleball?
First, it is the friendships I’ve made. I also appreciate that it keeps me active. I play mostly at Forte and The Pacific Club, which is much more exciting than going to the gym. I enjoy the challenge of improving my skills and being a better partner, but most of all, I have so much fun! I can be a serious player while still smiling and laughing throughout a match. Oh, and I forgot to mention I enjoy imbibing after games with my crazy friends!
How often do you play?
Usually three times a week, and occasionally a fourth day when I’m lucky.
What paddle are you using, and what do you like about it?
I am currently using the Selkirk Boomstik Widebody. Since I don't have a naturally strong drive, this paddle helps me hit more explosive shots. The wide body also has a generous sweet spot, so no excuse to miss a ball. My first " set " was actually a $30 Winlook pair from Amazon! LOL
What is the next goal you’re working toward (in pickleball or otherwise)?
I am working toward becoming a consistent 3.5 player with the goal of eventually competing at the 3.5 / 4.0 level. I am focusing on my drops, resets, anticipating counter-attacks, and upping my pickleball IQ. Nah, just play using my instincts. LOL
What do you do outside of pickleball (hobbies, work, volunteerism, school, etc.)?
I have been an Event and Wedding Planner for 23 years (@coutureweddingshawaii). I also do interior design work as a certified home stylist, love to travel, and enjoy cooking and eating for my social platform (@foodtemptresshawaii). I occasionally volunteer with Meals on Wheels from time to time.
Anything else on your mind?
I would like to create a cookbook featuring my easy " cheat " recipes and friends' special dishes.
