A Spirit of Welcome and Aloha: Introducing HPM Ambassador Kathy Nakasone

Pickleball Spotlight: Kathy Nakasone

How a Family Trip Sparked a Passion and a Role in Growing the Pickleball Community

Honolulu—A family visit to San Diego was all it took to introduce Kathy Nakasone to the sport that would soon become part of her everyday life. Along the way, she’s rediscovered connections, built new friendships, and found joy in showing up to the courts on the daily. I first met Kathy at an Open Play, where she was kind and welcoming—never once making me feel bad for playing badly, and that positivity has shone through in every interaction since. We’re delighted to welcome Kathy as HPM’s newest ambassador, adding her generous spirit and unmistakable good energy to our expanding community.

Without further ado, please meet Kathy Nakasone!

Currently residing in: Honolulu.

My older daughter, Marissa, introduced our family to pickleball when we were visiting her in San Diego in April 2023, and I started playing regularly in August 2023.

What do you love most about pickleball?

I love how welcoming the pickleball community is and how the different generations all come together to play. Met so many awesome people and some who have become good friends.  I also reconnected with my cousin, whom I haven’t seen in a long time.

I’m currently using a CRBN as it plays well when it’s windy.

My pickleball goal for 2026 is to move up to the next level and successfully compete.

What do you do outside of pickleball (hobbies, work, volunteerism, school, etc.)?
